What is Textbook in Tagalog? Origin, Evolution, and Printed vs Digital

A textbook in Tagalog is called “aklat-aralin,” where “aklat” means “book” and “aralin” means “study.” However, Filipinos today call it a “textbook” or simply “teksbuk.” In today’s digital era, students have a new way of reading textbooks through various devices. Yet, a lot of them still prefer using printed textbooks over electronic textbooks, also known as e-textbooks.

The origin of textbooks goes back a long time and shows how education and sharing knowledge have changed over the years. It all started in ancient times, like in Mesopotamia and Greece, where people used clay tablets and papyrus scrolls as early learning materials. These first sets of textbooks covered many subjects, like mathematics, astronomy, and stories.

During the Middle Ages, people made books by hand. The entire process was hard work and needed many people. They had to use animal skin to make the pages, cut them, and sew them together. They also had to mix inks, get pens ready, and draw lines on the pages for writing. This process took a lot of effort and often required a team of people to complete.

At that time, illuminated manuscripts became prominent as textbooks, often produced by monks in monasteries. These beautifully illustrated and meticulously handwritten books played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting knowledge, especially about religion. Big Bibles and important religious books were kept in churches.

In the 15th century, a German metalsmith named Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. This invention made it easier and cheaper to make books. It was a big deal because it meant more people could get books, not just the rich. In the Renaissance, textbooks started covering more topics like science, geography, and history.

The printing press revolutionized the production and distribution of textbooks and other educational materials, making them more widely available and affordable. Gutenberg’s invention significantly contributed to the spread of knowledge and played a crucial role in the later development and expansion of universities and formal education systems.

Meanwhile, e-textbooks tend to be better than the traditional printed textbooks. Aside from being lighter and cheaper, they also include multimedia elements, interactive quizzes, links to external resources, and the ability to search for specific keywords. Digital textbooks are also more environmentally friendly, as they reduce the need for paper production and transportation.
